Chapter Beginnings

Phi Delta Pi, a local society on the Swarthmore College campus, applied for a Kappa Alpha Theta charter in the spring of 1891. Alpha Beta's charter was granted at the Grand Convention in July of that year and remained active at Swarthmore until 1934. In 2013, Alpha Beta was re-established, becoming the first women’s fraternity on campus in nearly 80 years. Due to anti-fraternity sentiment on campus and the banning of all fraternities and sororities, Alpha Beta closed in 2019.

Notable Thetas

From the very beginning, Theta alumnae have distinguished themselves in their careers and their volunteer endeavors. In fact, some are so well-known that they’re household names, and many have the distinction of being the first women in their professional fields. The archives takes this opportunity to recognize some of our more notable sisters.
