Chapter Beginnings

In 1848, the University of Mississippi in Oxford was the first public university chartered in the state. The university — one of the first in the South to admit women — was also the first in the South to hire a female faculty member. In the fall of 1978, Epsilon Zeta Chapter became the Fraternity’s first chapter in Mississippi. The university offered a warm “Ole Miss” welcome, despite an unusual snowfall on installation day in early 1979. The chapter left campus in 2018.

Notable Thetas

From the very beginning, Theta alumnae have distinguished themselves in their careers and their volunteer endeavors. In fact, some are so well-known that they’re household names, and many have the distinction of being the first women in their professional fields. The archives takes this opportunity to recognize some of our more notable sisters.
