Mary at Bettie's grave
I must say that the quest to find the last two graves of our founders was quite eventful! The adventure to find Bettie Locke Hamilton started off pretty normal when we arrived at Forest Hill Cemetery in Greencastle. We were not expecting this find to take quite as long as it did, becasue we had a location for her grave: Lot 6, B4, R7. We thought this meant “Section Six,” which is where my husband and I began our search. Up and down, back and forth we went, to no avail. Finally, after 45 minutes of being aggravated with not being able to find her—combined with the late August rising heat and humidity—we decided that either the location was not correct or we just didn’t know what we were doing and professional help was needed in order to find her. Eventually we found the groundskeeper on his golf cart who took us to the office to look for Bettie on his map. He then gave us directions and confirmed for us that Lot 6 did not have anything to do with Section 6. Bettie was buried in Section 5! Once we found out where this was and located the surrounding markers told to us by the groundskeeper, we began searching again. Five minutes later, I saw the Kappa Alpha Theta plaque marker and her headstone, and happily yelled out, "I found her!" Bettie is buried next to her husband Edwin and daughter Edna.
